Taungya System is an ancient agroforestry practice that blends agriculture and forestry to create a more sustainable and efficient use of land. It has been recognised for its role in improving soil fertility, providing livelihoods for local farmers, and aiding in forest conservation.

What is the Taungya System?

The Taungya System is a form of agroforestry where crops are grown alongside young trees or in forested areas to promote land restoration, increase biodiversity, and support local economies. The practice involves clearing land for agricultural cultivation while simultaneously planting tree saplings. Farmers are often allowed to harvest crops for several years before the trees mature and start to take over. The system is particularly beneficial for areas with degraded or marginal land.

History of Taungya Systems

Devised by Dr. Dietrich Brandis, a  German botanist-turned-forester after being asked for advice matters of forest management and started working for British Imperial Forestry Service in Colonial India.

He became the first Inspector General of Forests in India and formulated the Indian Forest Act of 1865

Created in Myanmar (formerly Burma) the mid 1850 and then introduced into India 1890.

The term "Taungya" originates from Myanmar, where the practice was first used. The word "taungya" (taung = hill, ya = cultivation) means "hill field" in the Burmese language, referring to the sloping terrains where the system is typically employed. During British colonial rule, the system was introduced as a way to both enhance food security and reforest the lands cleared for cultivation.

In its early days, the Taungya System was primarily used for teak plantations in Southeast Asia. Farmers were encouraged to plant crops between the rows of young teak trees. Over time, it became clear that this practice not only benefitted the farmers by providing them with food and income, but also helped in the reforestation of large areas, which had been degraded by deforestation.

How Does the Taungya System Work?

The Taungya System is a combination of agriculture and forestry. 

  • Land preparation

  • Growing agricultural crops for 1-3 years
  • Shade becomes too dense
  • Move on
  • Repeat cycle new area

Over time, the tree canopy grows thicker, and the crops are phased out, leaving a fully functional forest.

Benefits of the Taungya System

  • Biodiversity: By combining different plant species, the system supports a diverse ecosystem, with crops, trees, and wildlife interacting. This encourages a variety of beneficial organisms, such as pollinators and natural pest controllers, contributing to the overall health of the environment.
  • Soil Conservation: The practice helps prevent soil erosion and degradation, as tree roots stabilize the soil, preventing it from being washed away by rain. The presence of trees also improves soil fertility by returning nutrients to the soil through leaf litter and root decomposition.
  • Carbon Sequestration: The trees planted in the Taungya System absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, helping mitigate climate change. This makes the system a valuable tool in the fight against global warming.
  • Livelihoods for Farmers: By growing crops alongside trees, farmers can produce food and generate income while also being part of forest restoration efforts. This dual approach helps to address both food security and environmental conservation simultaneously.
  • Sustainable Land Use: The system promotes sustainable farming practices by reducing the need for deforestation. As trees mature and the canopy closes, farmers can transition from annual crops to more permanent agroforestry systems, such as fruit orchards or timber plantations.

Countries Using the Taungya System

The Taungya System has been widely adopted in various countries, particularly in Southeast Asia, Africa, and South America, where deforestation and soil erosion are pressing concerns.

Myanmar (Burma): As the birthplace of the Taungya System, Myanmar remains one of the countries where the practice is still prevalent. The system has been employed to reforest degraded lands and create sustainable livelihoods for rural communities.

India: The Taungya System has been used in India for decades, particularly in the states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha. India’s forestry department implemented the system to replant forests, primarily with species like teak, while allowing local farmers to cultivate crops such as beans, potatoes, and cassava. This has been especially useful in the context of restoring forests in the Western Ghats region. In southern India, the system is called 'kumri'

Still practiced in the Indian states of Kerala, West Bengal, Orissa, Karnataka and the north-eastern hill region.

Taungya System Sustainable Agroforestry

The Taungya System offers a sustainable solution to the challenges of deforestation, soil degradation, and food insecurity. By integrating agriculture with forestry, this practice helps improve the livelihoods of farmers while simultaneously restoring degraded lands. Though it has its challenges, the system remains a valuable tool in promoting environmental conservation and sustainable land use.

As the world faces increasing pressure from climate change and environmental degradation, agroforestry practices like the Taungya System may hold the key to building more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems for future generations.
